Case, ports and keyboard

Frame

The Dell Inspiron 5378 is made entirely of gray smooth plastic with a metallic effect. The case makes a very pleasant impression and is extremely practical, since fingerprints and stains are not visible on it.

The weight and dimensions of the laptop are a little larger than you expect. A height of 2 cm and a weight of 1.7 kg is perhaps a bit much for a 13.3-inch transformer, but this does not cause obvious discomfort.

Ports

All main ports are located on the left and right sides of the laptop. On the left is a charging socket, HDMI video output, 2 USB 3.0 connectors, a combined audio output, and on the right is a USB 2.0 port and a card reader.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard does not have a number pad; the power button is located on the right side. Next to it are volume rockers, which will be very useful if you use the device in tent or tablet mode. The keyboard itself is well secured and does not flex when typing. LED backlight is present.

All symbols are printed in white. By default, the multimedia buttons work, and the functions assigned to the F1-F12 keys are activated when they are pressed simultaneously with the Fn button.

The touchpad, rough to the touch, responds well and recognizes gestures. Pressing occurs with a slight click.

Screen

The IPS touch display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, and the finish is, as you would expect, glossy. Horizontal and vertical viewing angles are fully consistent with a transformer-class device. The sensor responds flawlessly and supports all major Windows gestures.

Since all touch screens are glossy, this causes a certain discomfort. Next to a bright light source, the display noticeably glares. The only way to avoid this is to increase the brightness of the display, and the Dell Inspiron 5378 copes with this. However, it does not have a brightness reserve, and it is problematic to use it in bright sunshine.

Sound

The sound is the same as most ultrabooks. It will be enough for watching videos on YouTube or TV series, but for listening to music it is better to use headphones or, as the author did, Bluetooth speaker.

Performance

In our modification, the seventh generation dual-core low-voltage processor Intel Core i5-7200U is responsible for performance. This processor has low power consumption, decent performance and a good built-in video core, which even allows you to play some games. Based on numerous observations, I can conclude that Intel Core i5 will be more than enough for any ultrabook or convertible laptop.

Our configuration provides 8 GB RAM DDR4 format with a frequency of 2133 MHz and a 2.5" SATA III SSD drive with a capacity of 256 GB. The combination of this “filling” ensures stable operation of the main office programs, such as 1C:UT, Microsoft Office and a browser with a dozen open tabs. Everything works in parallel without freezes, and thanks to solid state drive all applications launch quickly.

In connection with all of the above, we can safely recommend the Dell Inspiron 5378 not only as a multimedia laptop for every day, but also as a work device. Perfect for people with traveling work.

If we talk about games, then you need to understand that the device is not a gaming device, and its cooling is not “tailored” for such tasks. However, if you really want to, then you can.

For example, in such hits from Blizzard as Diablo 3 and Star Craft 2, with Full lHD resolution and medium settings. We also launched Blackguards and the first Witcher, which play perfectly on medium-low settings in native resolution.

Tests

To objectively assess the laptop's performance, we present the test results:

  • 3DMark - general performance test in 3D games;
  • PCMark is a comprehensive system benchmark for comprehensive system evaluation, including gaming performance, HD video and HD audio playback capabilities, storage speed evaluation and network adapters etc.;
  • Unigine heaven - a benchmark for evaluating the performance of video cards in 3D mode;
  • FINAL FANTASY XIV Official Benchmark;
  • Battery eater - duration test battery life laptop.

Cooling system

The cooling system consists of a small cooler and a heat pipe. At first glance, it may seem rather modest, but it gets the job done.

To evaluate the cooling efficiency, the AIDA 64 test was run for system stability.

The stress test took almost an hour. As you can see, the processor maintains the declared frequency in Turbo mode, although the temperatures are quite high. On the other hand, if you suddenly need everything that this laptop is capable of, then you can get it.

In this test, we deliberately did not include testing of the video core, since the device is not positioned as a gaming device or suitable for working with graphics.

Temperature tests

As you can see in the diagram, when idle and solving everyday tasks, the laptop does not heat up at all. Under load, the bottom of the laptop and the working part warm up noticeably. However, this does not cause discomfort during work, since not the entire working surface as a whole is heated, but only the gap between function keys and display.

Autonomy

In the reading test with the display at maximum brightness and Wi-Fi laptop worked for about 6.5 hours. In streaming video mode, the user can count on 5 - 5.5 hours of battery life. A fully charged Dell Inspiron 5378 will last about two hours in games; by the way, it will take about the same amount of time to charge the transformer from 0 to 100%.

Let's sum it up

The Dell Inspiron 5378 (5378-0384) has a huge number of advantages. It has perfectly balanced hardware, a non-staining body, good system cooling and decent autonomy. There are also some minor drawbacks - the weight and thickness of the device, but after a while you stop paying attention to them.

The transformable laptop performed well in everyday home use and as an office workhorse. Moreover, when working with office applications, the battery charge lasts almost a whole working day.

The price of the model is fair. If you want to save a little, you can take a closer look at configurations with hard drive.

I have 2 years of experience using this laptop. On the positive side - the hardware is quite powerful for its price - it was taken as a travel/home one, but immediately replaced the working SONY - videos are processed / uploaded to YouTube several times faster, programs work faster. I connect a monitor to it via HDMI. Video (movie or youtube), word, excel, mail, adobe, photo editor, 2 browsers with 10-20 open tabs, sometimes games work simultaneously - everything works at the same time. doesn't slow down. Very convenient availability touch screen. Convenient and reliable folding mechanism. I used it as a tablet (i.e., folding it) several times - it’s not very convenient - for a tablet it’s a bit heavy and thick. I fold it into a “house” regularly - it’s very convenient to put it on a flat surface and watch the video. Much more often I work on it spread out at about 160-170 degrees. Now the downsides: Not resistant to scratches on the outside. After a couple of months of use, in addition to a dozen small ones, several deep scratches appeared on the outside (apparently from lying in a briefcase next to the keys). I pasted a regular vinyl film on both sides (under the skin) - and for 1.5 years there have been no problems - it does not scratch and is stylish. The second disadvantage is fragility - the first days of use were frightened by the breathing keyboard - I got used to it - it no longer irritates me. The first time it hit a small child, one key was lost (torn off) (glued with superglue - it dangles, but it holds and works). The plastic of the case is quite fragile - the laptop has survived a dozen non-fatal falls - cracks immediately appeared on the corners - they are still there, but the case is holding up, appearance do not affect (visible only at a certain angle when pressed). MINUS 3: starting Windows8 and software from DELLA. There were strange braking/freezing. After forced shutdown Dell utilities and the transition to Windows 10 began to work much more stable and faster. Sometimes it starts to slow down - it has been experimentally established that this is a signal for an update - i.e. it has already downloaded the updates and is waiting for a reboot. Everything can be resolved by rebooting and installing the update. Then everything is ok. SUMMARY: a good laptop for its purposes. Despite the harsh operating conditions, it is alive and working without criticism

2-in-1 devices have conquered the mobile market firmly and for a long time. Every day, leading brands release new models of transformers in the hope of gaining more consumers. Sometimes these attempts are successful, sometimes they end in complete failure. So, Dell recently presented to the public its new creation - a 13-inch “changeover”. The device is equipped with a Kaby Lake generation processor, a high-quality Full HD screen and, of course, the ability to transform into one of four modes: laptop, tablet, console and presentation.

Design

Let's not lie - the Dell Inspiron 5378 looks simple and boring. The device is clad in a plastic case, without a single hint of metal. It is dominated by two colors: black (keys, bottom) and gray (lid, work area). In the center of the laptop lid is the company logo, and this is where the variety of details and design elements ends. The case is non-staining, largely due to the colors, which are not particularly visible for fingerprints and dust. The upper and lower parts of the laptop are attached to each other using two hinges. The hinge mechanism is different high quality: The hinges are quite tight, they do not creak and firmly hold the screen in a given position.

By the way, about the display. It is touch sensitive and is surrounded around the perimeter by a frame of medium thickness. There is a webcam on its upper edge, and at the bottom there is another logo, albeit a small one. The keyboard feels comfortable and is full-size, but has a bit of flex in the center. The interfaces are evenly distributed along the side edges of the case. The keyboard automatically turns off when the device is in any mode other than the "laptop" position.

Finally, we note the dimensions of the Dell Inspiron 5378 – 325x224x20 mm, the weight of the device is 1.7 kg. Such heavy weight, of course, is depressing, because, in fact, it puts an end to the high mobility of the device. A 13-inch laptop with such weight is still all right, but besides it there are three more modes! It’s unlikely that anyone would want to hold an almost 2-kilogram tablet in weight, so for such a defect we give the manufacturer a big minus.

Display, sound and webcam

The 13.3-inch screen has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The glossy surface of the display means only one thing: the screen will glare mercilessly in the sun. For this reason, we strongly recommend using the device in the shade, otherwise you risk not being able to see anything. The maximum brightness is 250 cd/m2, that is, its reserve is quite limited, this must be taken into account. Contrast ratio – 988:1. Compliance with the sRGB color space is 62%, AdobeRGB - 46%, so even theoretically professional image processing on the Dell Inspiron 5378 is simply impossible.

IPS matrix means no inversion, regardless of viewing angle. That is, no matter what angle you use the transformer from, the image quality will always be good. The capacitive display supports 10-finger multi-touch control. The sensor works quickly, there is no need to repeat the command.

The two speakers located on the bottom of the device do not have good acoustic data. The bass in the sound is almost inaudible, with high frequencies things are getting better. At maximum the sound does not wheeze, and that’s good for that. Due to the specific location, the speakers often produce a somewhat muffled sound, since they are not directed at the user, but in “tablet” mode they are completely covered with a lid. The camera resolution is 1 megapixel. Its capabilities are enough to communicate with friends, but you can’t count on high-quality photos.

Keyboard and touchpad

The working area of the laptop does not stand apart from the general background, and is also made of plastic. Most of it is occupied by the keyboard unit, slightly recessed into the surface so as not to come into contact with the screen. The keyboard is full-size, island-type. It has large square buttons marked with white markings. There is a two-level backlight, which will definitely come in handy for users working at night.

The keyboard has average key travel and good response. The button is one-story, but there is a slash located close to it, so it may seem that they are a single whole. Below it is an oblong one, opposite it is the same. Although the pointer block is miniature, it is placed separately, so the risk of touching nearby buttons is minimized. There is no numpad, which is logical for the 13-inch form factor.

The rectangular touchpad has impressive dimensions. It has a slightly rough surface and clear boundaries, so finding the manipulator even in the dark is not difficult. There are no physical keys, instead there are built-in keys, conventionally marked with a vertical separator. The touchpad supports multi-touch gestures and performs them quickly.

Performance

Dell Inspiron 5378 (5378-8937) is based on the operating room Linux system. The processor used is Intel Core i5-7200U of the Kaby Lake generation. Its two cores are overclocked from 2.5 to 3.1 GHz, and there is also support Hyper-Threading technology, which facilitates the operation of four threads simultaneously. The chip is made according to the 14-nm process technology, has 3 MB of Level 3 cache and consumes energy sparingly - only 15 W.

The built-in Intel HD Graphics 620 graphics card is responsible for graphics processing. Its base frequency is 300 MHz, Turbo mode it reaches 1000 MHz. The graphics support DirectX 12 technology and are made using a 14nm process technology. It can easily handle everyday tasks like web surfing, Excel, Word, etc. Games are also a feasible mission, although limited in capabilities. Thus, Titanfall 2 (2016) on medium and with a screen resolution of 1366x768 pixels will show 27 frames per second. You won’t be able to play at all at high or maximum settings, except for very old and simple games.

The amount of RAM is 8 GB of DDR4-2400 MHz standard, the maximum you can get is 16 GB. To store information, a 1 TB hard drive with a spindle speed of 5400 rpm is provided. Model range also includes configurations with an SSD drive.

Ports and communications

The set of interfaces is basic, the standards are outdated. On the left side of the device there are two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI video output, a combined audio jack and a socket for charging the device.

The right side has USB port 2.0, SD card reader and Kensington lock slot. There are also two physical buttons: one turns on the laptop, the second adjusts the sound volume. It's a pity, but modern ports USB Type-C or Thunderbolt in this laptop you will not see.

Wireless communications include Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and Bluetooth 4.2.

Battery

The Dell Inspiron 5378 is equipped with a 3-cell Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 42 Wh. The battery capacity is enough for 7.5 hours of watching movies or 7 hours of web surfing. At maximum load, the device will sit down after an hour and a half. The results do not break records, but in general they are quite optimistic.

Conclusion

The Dell Inspiron 5378 transformer is an interesting device, but lacks any innovations. The modern user has long been familiar with the ability to change usage scenarios, so there is nothing particularly surprising. However, the device has a number of advantages: a 13.3-inch high-quality Full HD screen with good color reproduction, modern hardware components in the form of an Intel Core i5-7200U processor and an Intel HD Graphics 620 video card. The transformer has a robust body with a well-designed hinge mechanism and non-marking surface. In addition, it has a comfortable keyboard, suitable for both gaming and long typing.

As for the shortcomings, there are them too. Firstly, the device is very heavy, and if 1.7 kg is forgivable for a 13-inch laptop, then for a tablet it is absolutely not. The lack of modern ports is another shortcoming of the manufacturer. Well, and a boring appearance - although this drawback is still subjective. However, all the disadvantages are more than offset by the pleasant price: the Dell Inspiron 5378 (8937) costs about $750.

Many people believe that using modern technologies in the learning process helps to achieve success at school, university and outside the classroom. That's why, as we approach the start of the new school year, Dell is inviting students to start it off with its new 2-in-1 Dell Inspiron line of all-in-one devices, featuring modern features and design, a compact and lightweight design, and long battery life.

A bright and compact model opens the line of new transformable laptops for study Inspiron 11 3000 series (3168):

This 11" 2-in-1 device combines a high-performance laptop and a convenient tablet in a compact, stylish design that's easy to carry and is available at affordable price. It features a vibrant 1366 x 768 pixel HD display and the latest Intel processor, which makes it, according to the manufacturer, ideal for comfortable web surfing, writing coursework or dissertation work and communicating via the Internet. The transformer is available in blue, white and red colors (color availability depends on sales region). The recommended retail price (including VAT) for the basic configuration is 33,500 rubles.

Inspiron 13 features an attractive new design and a touchscreen display Full resolution HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) with wide viewing angles. Available in some configurations, an infrared camera with Windows Hello technology lets you bypass the password and sign in to your account by recognizing the user's face, and the backlit keyboard allows you to work comfortably in low-light conditions. Depending on the configuration, the laptop may be equipped solid state drive, providing increased operating speed operating system, increased battery life and data safety during accidental shocks compared to a hard drive. The system is lightweight (from 1.62 kg) and compact size, which makes it, according to the company, ideal for daily trips. The recommended retail price (including VAT) for the basic configuration is 42,500 rubles.

The last “transformer” on this list is a laptop Inspiron 17 7000 series (7778), the most powerful 2-in-1 in the Inspiron lineup:

The 17-inch Inspiron 17 (7778) laptop is made of aluminum and is, as noted above, the most productive device in the line. It is equipped with a widescreen Full HD display, backlit keyboard, infrared camera and software to improve the sound Waves MaxxAudio Pro. In addition, there is room for an improved touchpad with increased recognition accuracy and support for gestures and wireless adapter the latest generation Intel Dual Band AC 3165, which provides the ability to receive a stable signal at a long distance from the access point. The recommended retail price (including VAT) for the basic configuration is 74,000 rubles.

In addition to the presented transformable laptops, Dell offers pupils and students to purchase a regular laptop - which it positions as the most compact 13-inch laptop in the world:

This ultra-compact (from 1.2 kg) and thin (15 mm) laptop with a 13-inch Full HD display, housed in a standard 11-inch system, is the smallest device in its class on the planet (according to the manufacturer). It features an edge-to-edge InfinityEdge display and provides up to 18 hours of battery life, which the company says makes it ideal for students who need a computer that's always with them. The recommended retail price (including VAT) for the basic configuration is 92,000 rubles.

Despite the low price, which is usually typical for very compromise laptops, the Dell Inspiron 7347 seemed to me to be an excellent laptop - even if it were just a laptop, but it can also turn into a tablet thanks to the lid rotating 360 degrees! Its most important advantage is a display with good contrast and excellent color rendition, which does not need to be “corrected” with a colorimeter, as is often the case even with expensive laptops. In addition to this, the screen has wide viewing angles, the image is almost not distorted from whatever point of view you look at it - this is very rare for inexpensive laptops.

Secondly, the Inspiron 7347 can work for a very long time on a single battery charge, for example, more than 8 hours when watching movies. Thirdly, it is equipped with an excellent cooling system, quiet and very efficient. Fourthly, although it is not equipped with an SSD, it hard drive, most likely hybrid, provides quick start OS and applications. Fifthly, this laptop has a backlit keyboard, which is also unheard of generosity in this price segment. But the hero of the review also has a couple of drawbacks - low display resolution, 1366x768 pixels, and also low maximum brightness.

However, the Dell Inspiron 7347 wins the Good Buy award for being a surprisingly inexpensive laptop for its quality.
