Use Android Task Manager

The latest versions of Android OS have a special Storage panel where you can see what is taking up the most memory on your device. To find it, go to settings → applications. Here you will see how much space each application and its data take up, such as image and video files, audio files, downloads, cached data and other files.

Go to the list of applications, see what exactly takes up the most space, delete what you can do without. Go to downloads and see the list of downloaded files. Remove unnecessary downloads. Delete data located in the installed applications cache. Go through everything and remove the most unnecessary items, especially those that take up more space.

When working with applications, keep in mind that not only the application itself takes up space, but also the data it uses and its cache. For example, if you have the Spotify app installed and listen to a lot of music offline, the program may take up more than 1 GB of space. To free up more space, you can delete cached data or launch Spotify and set the settings to a lower maximum amount of memory used for offline listening. You can see how much system memory data files are taking up and clear cached data for each individual application by going to the appropriate application list item in the task manager or by going to applications from the main Settings screen.

The built-in Storage tool of the Android OS is good for visually assessing the space occupied by various types of data, but not for finding out the amount of memory occupied by individual folders and files. For the latter, you will need an application from a third party developer. For example, an excellent and free program called DiskUsage. Install it from Google Play, run it and see what happens to the file system of your gadget.

Use visualization to see which folders and files are taking up the most space. You can delete them directly from the DiskUsage application. For example, here you can find folders left over from already deleted games. Usually such folders are deleted during uninstallation, but this does not always happen. In this case, you will have to remove them manually. Select the appropriate folder or file, go to the menu and click “delete”.


Please note that in DiskUsage you can delete files that your installed applications depend on. Don't delete app-related data unless you want to lose it. In many cases, the data is synced online and can be safely deleted. The next time they are needed, they will simply be downloaded from the Internet.

Insert SD memory card and transfer data there

Many Android devices still use microSD card slots, although they are becoming less common on newer devices. If your phone or tablet does have a microSD slot, you can purchase an appropriate memory card and insert it into your mobile phone or tablet, thus increasing the amount of space for recording data.   2. Another way is to simple removal applications, this can be done through the task manager or the “Applications” menu from the previous paragraph. The exception is pre-installed programs, which cannot be uninstalled using standard methods. In this case, you will need root rights.   3. Periodically you need to clear the cache and temporary files; this is best done using special applications, which will be discussed below.   4. There is a cleaning method using a file manager. It seems that everything is very easy here - you just need to delete files, but this is not true. If you don’t have root rights, you won’t be able to erase anything important, but when full access is granted (third-party managers often use it), you need to be careful. Before carrying out the procedure, it is better to create a system save and place everything on another medium.
  5. As an alternative, you can use cloud file storage. This means that you will always have access to them via the Internet. How to free up RAM on Android

This is a special section of the smartphone’s memory; the amount of RAM cannot be combined with memory cards, and you cannot record a movie or game there. It is needed to store application data. After the job is completed, the memory is freed, but many programs continue to run in background. Sometimes such a function is really necessary, but in most cases you can do without it.

  1. The easiest way to clear RAM is to turn off programs rather than minimize them with the Home key.. But, unfortunately, many developers simply do not provide such a function in their applications or it is difficult to find. Sometimes pressing "Back" several times helps, but nothing is guaranteed.
  2. Another way is to force stop the most resource-intensive applications. The list is available in the “Applications” item, which can be found in the settings. The “Running” tab displays all programs, except system ones, that are running in at the moment, on the right is the amount of memory they occupy. Just check the box next to desired application and click “Stop” (button below), but in this case, unsaved information may be lost.

The most radical way to solve the problem is to reboot the device.

Using special programs

As a rule, this is not a consequence of a virus or your carelessness, but simply a system recovery service Windows, incorrectly configured paging file and others. Often the reason for a place selling is also a high browser cache value or an OS cluttered with all sorts of software garbage.

How to find out why a space disappears in Windows

As I said, there are several sources where space can go missing.
Let's look at them in order.

First, the recovery system. The point is that Microsoft, taking care of its users, did in Windows a recovery system that makes a big difference when your place goes missing (even though it's actually just "hidden").

What it does (if you haven’t changed the settings) is that at some intervals (especially in the case of installing programs\games\) it makes restore points, which you can always use in case of a system crash/failure. The question is, are you using this recovery system?

For example, I have a hard time remembering the last time I had to do this. Moreover, the benefits of it are very doubtful. In turn, these points occupy up to 12% places on everyone hard drive, which, you see, is a lot (especially on disks large size). Therefore, here's how to get rid of (or at least reconfigure) the amount of space occupied by recovery points.

How to get back space on your computer disk

Start-> Settings->Control Panel -> System->System Restore

For Windows Vista/Windows 7/8/10:

Start-> Settings->Control Panel -> System->System protection

Here you can either completely disable system recovery, or distribute the points on which disks and how much space they will take up.

I cannot recommend that you completely disable recovery, because... I don't know how often you encounter systemic problems and resort to recovery, but personally I have it disabled, because... I consider it a dubious tool that takes up quite a lot of space, especially since you can always use the " " article to protect and restore data.

For those who want to leave it (system restore), but configure it as competently as possible and make it so that they no longer have to look for where the space disappears:

  1. It is advisable that they should not be on the disk with the operating system at all or should take up as little space as possible;
  2. You don't need more 3 recovery points, i.e. You shouldn’t set the maximum percentage even on several disks. It will be enough 3-6 % on one or two disks and then, in my opinion, this will be a lot.

By the way, before configuring these parameters, the system had already created a number of restore points, so it would be a good idea to delete them. To do this, open " My computer", click right click mouse on the hard drive the place where you need to clear and select from the drop-down list "Properties".

In the window that appears, click on the button “ Disk Cleanup” – “Additionally” – “System Restore” – “Clear” – “Yes” – “OK“.

When operating system is not enough, it starts unloading programs into the swap file, i.e. a file on the hard drive that serves as a kind of RAM, but much slower. Accordingly, the size of the paging file may vary, depending on the amount of RAM you have.

By default, the paging file size is 2-4 times the amount of physical RAM, but this size can be changed, however, often to the detriment of performance (especially if there is little RAM). He also answers the question of where the place disappears, because he occupies this very place with all his strength.

Configure the location and size of the paging file to hard drives here:

  • Start-> Settings-> Control Panel -> System-> Additionally> Performance> Options> Additionally>Virtual memory -> Change

I still don’t recommend disabling the entire paging file, but redistributing or reducing it is always welcome. I wrote more about the paging file and its configuration in the article, so read it to set the correct numbers.

Cache, trash and where does the space go?

During operation of the system, programs, browsers and other things, constantly create a so-called cache, i.e. temporary auxiliary files, which (files) they periodically forget to delete. Also, after removing various programs, they usually leave behind garbage traces of files, which also sometimes weigh quite a lot.

Therefore, I recommend that you constantly clean Tempory Internet Files, browser cache, program traces and other all kinds of garbage. I wrote how to do this in the article "". I strongly recommend you read it, because it often frees up a lot of space.

Other manual cleaning

First, turn on the display of hidden files. To do this, we follow the path “ My Computer – Tools – Folder Options – View – Show hidden files and folders - OK".

Next, open the disk with the system and find the folder there Documents and Settings. It contains your profile files and some system\program settings. The whole point is that most programs, especially if you deleted them incorrectly, i.e. without use, say, they leave behind a bunch of traces and debris, which sometimes are not even cleaned out CCleaner. You have to dig with your hands. The most cluttered folders in my opinion are:

  • C:\ Documents and Settings\ Name\Application Data;
  • C:\ Documents and Settings\ Name\Local Settings\Application Data.

Where C:\- the disk where the system is located, and Name– this is your name in the system.

Carefully rummage through these folders and delete folders with the names of programs that have not been on your computer for a long time.

You can find the rest of the thick folders yourself by selecting one\group of folders in Documents and Settings and checking their volume by clicking the right mouse button and selecting the item “ Properties“. As a rule, when traveling like this, you can find a lot of all sorts of junk that was forgotten (or deliberately left behind) by program uninstallers.

Memory in Windows is located in the page file (a file called pagefile.sys), and the operating system has the ability to change the settings for this memory. You need to follow these steps:

  • open Control Panel

  • Advanced tab

The section called Virtual Memory will show you the amount of memory that is available in given time. To change the settings, click the Change button. How to clear computer virtual memory?

Clearing virtual memory is necessary to preserve the confidentiality of the data that remains in the paging file. In general, the paging file cleaning function is disabled. For it to start working, you need to do the following:

  1. go to the Start menu, then Settings => Control Panel.
  2. Next, in the Control Panel window, open Administrative Tools.
  3. In the window that opens, select the Local Security Policy folder.
  4. A window called Local Security Settings will open. In the list, select Shut down: clear virtual memory file, right-click and select Properties.
  5. In the Properties window, select Disable, then Apply and OK
  6. The status will be changed to Enabled

After this, the computer should be rebooted 2 times; after the 2nd reboot, the paging file will be cleared.

If, when working on a computer, you often see the “Insufficient virtual memory” window, by analogy with RAM, a solution naturally suggests itself - you need to clear the virtual memory. This is not the right decision. The problem of lack of virtual memory is solved by completely different methods. But if you are concerned about the safety of your secret information: logins, passwords, and so on, then the page file, also known as virtual memory, really needs to be cleared.

1 Click the Start button. Select Run. In the resulting line, type regedit. 5 Select the items “Administration”, “Local Security Policy”, “Security Settings”, the line “Shutdown: clearing the virtual memory page file”. Right-click the menu, select Properties, and check Enable.

6 Click “Apply”, then “OK”. Restart your computer.

To enable automatic virtual memory paging file cleanup during shutdown Windows operation 7, let's use the local security policy editor.
