Meizu M3 Max - Specifications. Meizu M3 Max

Home / Installing programs

IN lately Meizu is losing the competition to its eternal rival - Xiaomi brand, on all fronts: their devices, from budget solutions to flagships, are an order of magnitude less popular among buyers.

Meizu M3 Max, which is reviewed in this article, is designed to compete with Xiaomi Mi Max, which has successfully established itself in the mid-price phablet segment. Let's test the device and see if it deserves your attention.

Price and main characteristics

The M3 Max went on sale in one version with 64 GB of internal memory and 3 GB of RAM on board. Color options are silver, black, pink and gold. The cost of the phablet in China is $230; in Russia you can buy it for 22-24 thousand rubles.

Specifications:

  • display: 6”, IPS FHD 1920*10800 px;
  • processor: MediaTek Helio P10 + Mali T8600 video accelerator;
  • RAM: 3 GB;
  • internal memory: 64 GB + flash cards up to 256 GB;
  • camera: main – 13 MP, front – 5 MP;
  • communications: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, LTE, USB-C;
  • battery: 4160 mAh.

In terms of characteristics, the phablet is very similar to the 5.5-inch M3E; the differences are only in the increased amount of built-in memory, a more capacious battery and a 0.5-inch larger screen.

Equipment and appearance

The M3 Max comes in a thick blue cardboard box with a dust jacket over it. The manufacturer took good care of the packaging of the smartphone; everything was done carefully; each accessory was provided with a small separate box.

Included with the phablet we get:

  • USB-C cable;
  • charging adapter;
  • technical waste paper;
  • SIM tray clip.

The scope of delivery is frankly poor, but this is the policy advocated by most Chinese manufacturers, so there is nothing unusual here.

The M3 Max is made in a monolithic metal case, the device is well assembled - there are no backlashes or creaks at all. The front of the case is covered with Gorilla 3 protective glass with 2.5D curves around the edges, the thickness of the side frames is average.

Above the screen there are light/proximity sensors, an earpiece hole and a front camera, below the screen there is a mechanical Home button with a proprietary fingerprint sensor mTouch 2.1.

On the back of the smartphone there is a main camera module that does not protrude beyond the plane of the body, and a two-tone flash. The plastic strips for the antenna stand out against the background of the metal part of the phone, which somewhat spoils the overall impression.

Screen

With any phablet, the main focus is on the display, and the M3 Max doesn't disappoint here. The smartphone has an FHD IPS matrix with a 6-inch diagonal and a pixel density of 367 ppi. The screen is made using OGS technology, has a multi-touch for 10 touches and a good oleophobic coating.

Overall, the M3 Max deserves a solid A in terms of screen.

Performance

The M3 Max is equipped with a mid-range Helio P10 processor with 3 GB of RAM, which is enough for most everyday tasks. The interface works smoothly, the cache can handle up to 4-5 resource-intensive applications without crashes, and you can play demanding games at medium graphics settings.

In the benchmark, the device scores 49 thousand points. Under load, the smartphone heats up to 43 degrees – this is a normal indicator; there is noticeable, but not critical throttling. In terms of performance, the M3 Max can be called a typical mid-ranger.

Camera

The photographic capabilities of the M3 Max, for a smartphone costing 230 bucks, are frankly weak. Despite the excellent functionality standard application cameras, automatic pictures suffer from poor detail and sharpness, the presence of “soap” and problems with dynamic range.

In poor lighting, the situation is even worse, since the already not exemplary detail is choked by a crudely working noise reduction.

Adequate selfie quality from the 5 MP front sensor can only be achieved with daylight. In terms of video, the M3 Max has everything standard, shooting is carried out in FHD resolution with a frequency of 30 fps, the quality is comparable to photos.

Speaker, sound quality

Traditionally for smartphones, Meizu M3 Max produces excellent sound quality in headphones, despite the absence of a dedicated audio chip in this model. For those who like to use a smartphone as an MP3 player, this phablet will definitely not disappoint.

Things are more modest with the main speaker; it is quite loud and has even a slight hint of low frequency- for your price category quite good. The sound does not spoil the impression of watching movies and videos, but the speaker is not suitable for full listening to music.

Battery

The performance of the phablet with a 6-inch display is ensured by a 4160 mAh battery, which, as practice shows, is more than enough. The M3 Max has excellent battery life - it lasts up to 7 hours when surfing the Internet (at maximum screen brightness), 10 hours when playing video, and a day with continuous music playback.

In intensive use mode, the phablet lasts for a day; if you save the battery, the life of one charge can be extended to 2 daylight hours. The M3 Max supports fast charging, which takes an average of an hour and a half.

Communication and Internet

The smartphone is equipped with a hybrid card slot; it works with 2 SIM cards or one SIM card and a flash drive. During testing, while the review of the M3 Max was being prepared, there were no problems with the quality of communication; the device supports 4G frequencies of all domestic operators; it can work with navigation GPS satellites and GLONASS also no complaints.

You can complain about the lack of an infrared port and an NFC module, but for the middle price category this is already nit-picking.

Video review of Meizu M3 Max

Competitors, conclusion

Meizu M3 Max 64gb turned out to be a smartphone that cannot be called anything other than “one of many”. Overall, this is a phablet with fairly balanced characteristics, the only frank drawback of which can be called a bad camera.

A quick review of competitors allows us to highlight devices such as Zenfone Laser 2, ZTE Nubia Z11 Max, but the most attractive option seems to be the old Lenovo Vibe Z2 Pro, which costs 3 thousand less, but boasts a more powerful processor, the best cameras and a screen with 2K resolution. However, the Lenovo phablet has an unpleasant drawback in the form of outdated Android 5.0 on board.

As with the recent presentation of Meizu M3e, the company’s next announcement leaves a strange aftertaste and one important question hanging in the air: who is this device for and why?

Here I can only repeat my thought from the first glance at Meizu M3e - the company, until recently considered a manufacturer of one device per year, began to form a full-fledged model range, and that’s why it now seems as if Meizu is churning out one device after another. And they really are churning out, but mostly to occupy those niches in which they are not yet represented. The niche of phablets is exactly that.

Xiaomi Mi Max with 6.44” screen, Huawei Mate 8 (6”), Lenovo VIBE Z2 Pro (6”), an oldie, but still. Each of these companies is a competitor to Meizu in the domestic market, which is what some Chinese brands are primarily targeting, and Meizu is one of them. Therefore, the appearance of the phablet was a matter of time, and now this moment has come.

Case design and materials

Everything is simple here - remember the Meizu M3e and visually enlarge it, you get the M3 Max. The design, the shape of the case, the arrangement of all elements, the implementation of plastic inserts for antenna wiring - in everything, the new M3 Max is a copy of the M3e. The workmanship is good, you can’t immediately call the device budget when you pick it up: it has an honest metal body, a minimum of plastic (two fine lines), neat processing, no squeaks, play of keys and so on. In fact, the M3 Max, like the M3e, M3 Note and M3s mini, belongs to Meizu's Meilan line of budget smartphones.

Compared to Meizu MX6

Compared to HTC Desire E9 Plus

Compared to Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge

The M3 Max will be available in four colors: white, gold and pink with a white front panel, and gray with a black front panel.

Dimensions

The device can hardly be called compact; it uses a 6" diagonal screen and the dimensions are built around it. Yes, the thickness of the frames on the left and right of the display is small, but the body of the smartphone is still wide. Those with large limbs will be able to use the device with one hand; others will have to get used to it or sometimes resort to using the second hand. The weight is within reason, I can’t say that the M3 Max is too heavy.

Controls

In terms of basic controls, the Meizu M3 Max is no different from the M3e. Power and volume buttons on the right, a tray for two nanoSIM cards (or a SIM card and a memory card) on the left, a microUSB connector, a microphone, a speaker grille and a 3.5 mm mini-jack at the bottom. On top is an additional microphone (noise reduction).

Below the screen there is a mechanical mTouch key with a touch layer and a fingerprint scanner embedded in it. The button is convenient and today is already found in all current Meizu smartphones, from M3s mini to MX6.

Screen

The device uses a 6" diagonal screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels based on an IPS matrix. A display with maximum viewing angles, a good margin of brightness and close to natural color rendition. The richness and brightness of the picture does not match the displays in the Meizu MX6 or Pro 6, but for an inexpensive smartphone the screen is good. There is an “eye protection” mode in which the screen works in warm colors, as well as the ability to manually adjust the color temperature. The oleophobic coating is excellent, there are no complaints here.

Platform, memory

The smartphone is built on the Helio P10 platform from MediaTek. It was also used in the M3 Note and M3e. This is not a top-end chip, but for FullHD resolution it is a completely acceptable option. Mali-T860 graphics. The smartphone has 3 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. There is a slot for a microSD memory card, combined with a second slot for a nanoSIM card. I will repeat the idea that I already voiced in relation to M3e - I like that the company is gradually moving away from creating various modifications, 2/16 GB, 3/32 GB and so on. One version of each smartphone in terms of the amount of RAM and internal memory is the best option. Less confusion, more transparent and understandable model range for ordinary users. In the case of Meizu M3 Max, this is 3/64 GB.

Camera

Both cameras, both the main one and the front one, have undergone almost no changes in terms of characteristics compared to the cameras in the M3 Note. The only thing that has changed is the sensor. Accordingly, the photo quality in the new M3 Max, upon first glance, is about the same as it was in the M3 Note and M3e. I will not describe individual features, but before us inexpensive smartphone, just look at the example photos and judge for yourself.

Like all other devices from Meizu, there is a completely manual shooting mode (this is good), and also the fact that the interface still cannot be rotated to landscape orientation (this is bad).

Interfaces

The device supports dual-band Wi-Fi and VoLTE technologies. In 4G networks, the smartphone operates in all bands common in Russia, except Band 20. Bluetooth version 4.1 with support for the LE (Low Energy) profile.

Battery

The battery capacity in the M3 Max is 4100 mAh, which is the same as in the M3 Note. On the one hand, this is a good volume, on the other hand, the main competitor, Xiaomi Mi Max, has an even larger capacity, 4850 mAh. I don’t know how the device will perform in terms of operating time, we’ll wait for a review from Roman Belykh!

The device supports fast charging (MediaTek PumpExpress technology).

Conclusion

In China, Meizu M3 Max will cost 1,700 yuan. The cost for Russia has not yet been determined, approximately 25,000-26,000 rubles, sales start in November.

Like the Meizu M3e, the new device was created primarily to expand the company’s product range. Meizu seeks to occupy niches in which it was not previously represented, and for a company that is demonstrating stable growth in China, its main market (as well as in Russia, India and other key but still insignificant markets) this is a logical step. Another question is that Meizu fans and people familiar with the brand expect something completely different from it - another breakthrough, improvements in the sound part, movement in the direction of improving cameras (MX6 is only the first step towards positive changes). A couple of years ago, it was customary to criticize Meizu for its inertia; supposedly the company produced a couple of devices a year and did not bother at all about those users for whom these models were not suitable, but wanted something from Meizu. Now the situation is exactly the opposite: Meizu is expanding its lineup, there are budget smartphones in metal (M3s mini and M3 Note) and in glass (U10 and U20), there is a compact flagship (Pro 6) and a camera-focused device (MX6), there is a phablet (M3 Max) and a device in the mid-price range (M3e) , and as it turns out, it's too much and confusing for users.

Obviously, for Meizu the new M3 Max is a niche device and will not be emphasized. Who might be interested in it? For lovers of devices with large screens, in metal, with a capacious battery. If you need a current and relatively inexpensive phablet with a display of 6" or more, then the choice, as it turns out, is very small: Xiaomi Mi Max, Meizu M3 Max, Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Sony Xperia C5 Ultra Dual, Samsung Galaxy A9 and old smartphones or expensive flagships (Huawei Mate 8).

In this review we will try to find out what the Meizu M3 Max is. And how the characteristics declared by the manufacturer manifest themselves in practice.

Meizu M3 Max can be called a “hybrid” model.

Manufacturers tried to create a gadget that would organically combine the functionality of a tablet and the convenience of a mobile phone.

Equipment

Meizu M3 Max is packed in this stylish box

Inside we find:

  • Telephone;
  • Power adapter;
  • USB cable;
  • SIM card tray ejector;
  • Documentation.

As you can see, there is nothing unusual in the configuration itself. However, it is worth noting the quality of the packaging. It is safe in every way.

Sealing on both sides prevents the phone from being replaced, and the phone itself and its components are packaged very high quality and tightly.

So you don’t have to worry about your smartphone being damaged during delivery.

Design

As for the design, it is well done. Taking the phone in your hands, you immediately feel the “good quality” of the assembly.

The body is completely metal, monolithic, without creaks or backlashes. And they are unlikely to appear after prolonged use. The arrangement of mechanical buttons is standard. On the right are power and volume, M-touch panel in the center.

But distinctive feature this is its size.

With a large 6-inch screen, the appearance of the gadget looks very “slender”. The thickness is only 8 mm. Therefore, the design solution can be rated a strong “five”.

However, it is worth saying that the large dimensions are unlikely to allow you to carry the phone in your pockets. You will have to store it either in your purse, or in a backpack, or in a special case.

Screen

Such large size can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. The size of the phone is a matter of taste.

But Meizu M3 Max positions such dimensions as, in fact, the highlight of the phone.

Why is such a large screen useful?

  • Not just big. The secret of Meizu M3 Max is that the screen is not just big. It's very high quality. gives a great picture.
  • Color rendering and viewing angle. There is excellent color rendition, brightness and contrast. And to all this, an excellent viewing angle. When rotated, colors are not inverted, faded or distorted.
  • Comfortable work in any weather. Even in bright sunshine, you are unlikely to feel any discomfort when using this phone.
  • FULL HD as it is. On the Meizu M3 Max screen you can feel the beauty of FULL HD resolution.

The manufacturer managed to create a phone model on which watching movies and TV series will be truly enjoyable.

Actually, in such a screen lies Meizu’s decision to combine both a phone and a phone in one gadget.

Also, Meizu M3 Max will definitely please fans of video calling. In short, this phone is more than good for multimedia entertainment.

Interface

The Meizu M3 Max model works on the popular Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We wrapped this operating system in the Flyme 6 interface.

I’m glad that the phone’s operating system is not “cluttered” from the very beginning with various absolutely useless applications.

It's worth saying that the operating system itself leaves contradictory impressions. It is rich in various functionality, but due to such richness it can hardly be called intuitive. It will also definitely take some getting used to if you haven't used Meizu phones before.

In contrast to these disadvantages, it is worth saying that the vast majority of Meizu users respond to Flyme 6 very positive.

The main 5 features in Flyme 6:

Convenient sound volume control:

When you press the volume buttons, a panel appears on the screen that allows you to change both the overall volume and the volume of calls and applications.

Convenient operation and systematization of notifications

Thanks to three options " Allow notifications», « Allow notifications without alerting" And " Block notifications» you can easily optimize the flow of notifications.

Quick access to the camera and music.

At double click HOME button opens music player or the main camera of the phone turns on.

This makes it very convenient quick start cameras without unlocking the phone.

Folder in Explorer "Frequent Folders"

This function, simple at first glance, makes it much easier to find the files you need.

You can add folders manually, or the system can add these folders automatically.

"Long screenshot"

A useful function that allows you to take a screenshot, for example, of the entire web page, even if the “length” of the page does not initially fit into the screen.

General work software leaves the most pleasant impressions. You are guaranteed pleasant web surfing, watching videos online and spending time on social networks.

Camera

The most “vulnerable” place in the Meizu M3 Max smartphone is the cameras.

There are two of them on the phone: front and main.

The main camera gives 13 MP images. There are no complaints about everyday shooting with good lighting.

However, as soon as there is a problem with light, problems with the image appear. Darkened areas come out with “noise”.

The same goes for 5 MP front cameras– very mediocre.

The Meizu M3 Max smartphone cannot be recommended in any way to those for whom the camera in the phone comes first in terms of criteria. Such “eyes” can provide the user with only the basic minimum.

You will always have the opportunity to post fresh photos in and others social media. However, the quality of the photos is not up to the mark.

Examples of photos are shown below.

Performance

The smartphone's hardware shows very good numbers in a variety of tests.

The performance of this gadget, of course, is enough to installed applications worked “lightly” due to the 3 GB of RAM installed on the phone.

However, it is worth mentioning separately about working with 3D applications, in particular “toys”.

Games

Meizu M3 Max cannot be called a gaming one. The installed Mali video accelerator, of course, copes with 3D games. However, performance is far from ideal.

For example, the same popular one will be playable only on low settings. In this case, FPS will be approximately 40-45 frames per second.

It's a shame. However, it is worth remembering: the manufacturer does not position the Meizu M3 Max as a gaming or mega-productive smartphone.

Multimedia

Multimedia Meizu M3 Max

The main feature of Meizu M3 Max is multimedia.

When you play a high-quality video file, you understand exactly why the Meizu M3 Max was created. This gadget does an excellent job with Full HD video and 4K video. 4K video plays perfectly. There is no “slowdown” when rewinding.

With high-quality video, the screen shows all its advantages to the fullest. Also, fans of watching movies and TV series will be pleased with as much as 64 GB of memory. You can fill your phone to capacity with your favorite TV series.

But not only this indicator makes Meizu M3 Max an ideal portable media platform.

Let's turn our attention to battery and power saving.

Energy saving

Meizu M3 Max will definitely outshine its competitors in this aspect.

The battery charge allows you to actively use the phone all day long: watch videos, listen to music, make calls, surf the Internet. The battery charge will last you the whole day.

Meizu M3 Max is a fast and impressive smartphone with a massive screen. The device belongs to the mobile devices of the middle price segment. The official presentation of the gadget took place in September 2016.

Appearance and ergonomics

The high-quality aluminum body of Meizu M3 Max has a smooth surface thanks to modern technologies metal processing. Its design is monolithic, which ensures perfect assembly. There are polished chamfers that separate back cover from the front. Straight lines with some curves predominate here. On the front there is a 2.5D protective glass that covers the entire space. Below the display you can find the mTouch 2.1 navigation button with a touch fingerprint scanner. On bottom end there are AUX and micro USB, and also has a microphone and external speaker. But on the back panel everything is pretty standard - a camera eye, a double flash and a corporate logo. Got the device powerful battery 4100 mAh, the charge of which easily lasts for an entire day of active use. There is also an mCharge function for safe and fast charging. Available colors: grey, gold, black and pink. Dimensions: height - 163.4 mm, thickness - 7.9 mm, width - 81.6 mm, weight - 189 g.

Display

The M3 Max model is equipped with a large 6-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. This display is implemented using OGS technology, which means there is no air gap for best quality images. The screen supports up to 10 simultaneous touches. As for viewing angles, they are as wide as possible here. The user will be pleased with the high contrast ratios, and the color temperature is close to the reference values. It is worth highlighting the high-quality oleophobic coating. The extended brightness range also does not disappoint.

Hardware and performance

M3 Max received 64 GB of internal memory, as well as 3 GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The device easily supports memory cards up to 128 GB. Inside there is a fairly fast processor with eight Helio P10 cores from MediaTek. This chip is capable of operating at its maximum frequency of 1800 MHz. The Mali-T860 3D accelerator is actively involved in graphics. The Android 6.0 operating system is the main platform, which is significantly modified using the Flyme OS shell. If we consider the level of performance, then in the AnTuTu test the gadget scores more than 50,000 points, which corresponds to the performance of middle-class models. This is a great option for everyday tasks. But in demanding games you will have to sacrifice picture quality for additional frames per second.

Communication and sound

Meizu M3 Max has a dedicated DAC that does its job well. The sound is tuned very well, it’s pleasant to listen to music with good headphones. The volume reserve is not the smallest, but not the largest either. The multimedia speaker is quite loud. The device supports all domestic LTE frequencies. You can install two SIM cards here.

Camera

Meizu M3 Max has a main 13-megapixel camera with F/2.2 aperture and dual flash. There is a large set of modes. Autofocus is very fast, allowing you to take pictures instantly. In low light conditions, annoying noise appears, but in daylight, photographs are distinguished by natural color rendition and good detail. The device is also equipped with a front 5-megapixel camera with F/2.0 aperture. Beauty features technology is very helpful when shooting self-portraits.

Conclusions

The M3 Max smartphone turned out to be an inexpensive and beautiful device. A special role plays here large display, as well as a powerful battery and high quality execution. In the kit you can find the gadget itself, a clip for removing the slot for memory cards and SIM cards, documentation, USB cable- microUSB, as well as a power adapter.

Pros:

  • Large high quality screen.
  • Great sound in headphones.
  • Solid indicators of autonomy.
  • Good build and stylish appearance.
  • Fast fingerprint scanner.

Cons:

  • NFC and infrared port are a little lacking.
  • The processor is not very suitable for demanding games.

Meizu M3 Max review

On September 5, 2016, Meizu introduced its first phablet M3 Max. Fans of the company have been waiting for such a step from Meizu for a long time and finally it has arrived. Meizu M3 Max, like the rest of the latest generation Meilan smartphones, is housed in a body made of a monolithic piece of metal. The design of the new product is traditional for Meizu devices released in 2016. It is also worth noting that Meizu releases its phablet in three colors: Gray, Gold and Silver. The smartphone will be available in autumn 2016.

Let's start our review with the display. On the front of the phablet there is a 6-inch FullHD 1080P display covered with high-quality tempered glass. The screen of the Meizu M3 Max is huge, but thanks to the high resolution, the pixels are not noticeable. Traditionally for Meizu, the smartphone screen has good viewing angles and sufficient maximum brightness for the display to be readable in the sun.
