There is a demand for new smartphones in retail. Sales of the Galaxy S8 in Russia are twice as high as those of the previous Samsung flagship Sales of the Samsung galaxy s8 in the world

Home / Breakdowns

Still, in a week, which is usually reserved for reviewing a top-end smartphone, you can find out all the strengths and weaknesses models are difficult. It’s another matter to spend a year with the device, learn its pros and cons in detail, and then make an informed decision: “Yes, my next phone will be of the same brand” or “No, I will never buy this junk again!”

A phone starts with design

For a long time it seemed to me that the times of the wow effect from new phones were somewhere in the distant past, when Nokia ruled the cellular world, and Symbian was considered the best OS. No, really, what can you come up with in a rectangle with a large screen? Somehow the only thing that managed to differentiate itself was Apple, and even then, from year to year the company became more and more repetitive and less and less surprising.

I would never have thought that Samsung would be able to revive the previous feelings of delight from the novelty of the phone. The company, of course, had successful examples of good Android smartphones, but there was nothing unusual in the appearance of all these Galaxy S - plastic and plastic. Everything changed with the release of the Galaxy S7, especially the G8.

Galaxy S8 looks very cool! Actually, that’s why I liked him in the first place. The elongated “limitless” display with rounded ends has not yet been replicated by anyone, and even a year after its release, the device still begs for the title of the most beautiful smartphone. And also very convenient. With such a diagonal, the 18:9 aspect ratio gave an excellent effect in terms of comfort.

However, a year later an unexpected effect appeared. Having gotten used to the shape and display of the Galaxy S8, standard phones with flat displays began to be perceived as unusual. You take one in your hand and think, wow, how flat! Such a funny addictive effect. However, after a couple of minutes you already want to return to your favorite proportions and shapes. I am sure that sooner or later all manufacturers will switch to similar design solutions. Although look at the iPhone X and the latest Android flagships - they have already followed in the footsteps of Samsung.

And everything would be great with the design and construction of the Galaxy S8, if not for the fingerprint sensor, or more precisely, its location. Guys, this is a real fail. How could it be done in such a way as to actually achieve complete unsuitability in everyday use? I don't know a single person who would get used to unlocking the S8 using a fingerprint without mental suffering.

The other “advanced” methods, by the way, are no better either. All this recognition of faces and irises, in my opinion, is too slow-witted and often mistaken. I had to give up unlocking altogether. Press the button, swipe up - and voila!

As strong as Stallone's biceps. But not eternal, like Jackie Chan's career

During my entire use of the Galaxy S8, the smartphone fell flat on the floor several times. I carried the phone without a case, because I always like to feel the device in my hand the way it was intended by the manufacturer.

For a very long time, the S8 held on stoically - small scratches dotted both glass, back and front. However, there were no critical breakdowns. But only until one day the smartphone slipped out of my pocket and slammed its corner onto the asphalt when I was getting out of the car.

A classic story that once again confirms that the most dangerous place in modern phones is precisely the corners. If it had been a different, classic device, everything would probably have ended with a chip on the body and a crack above the display. But here you literally have to pay for beauty. The edge-to-edge design of the screen leads to an increased risk of being left with a broken display.

Usually in such situations the issue is easily resolved: change the glass and that’s the end of it. Of course, this also works with the Galaxy S8, but it’s just too expensive. As I was told, the glass is replaced along with the matrix only to the original. You will have to pay about 500 rubles for everything. Expensive!

By force of will, I abandoned the replacement idea and continued to use the device “as is.” Fortunately, the fall did not affect the performance in any way; even the sensitivity of the sensor in the broken area was completely preserved.

In general, I was pleased with the device’s resistance to my lifestyle. But the cost of repairs was an unpleasant surprise.

Bright, juicy, reddish

Specialized sites have sung a lot of odes to the Galaxy S8 display, vying with each other to call it the best among the best. I will not repeat them, but will only describe my impressions.

Galaxy S8 shows off ultra high resolution- 2960×1440 pixels! Never used it. I turned it on a couple of times to feel the change, but in the end I didn’t notice any difference compared to 2220x1080. Everything is so clear, it hurts the eyes. By the way, I encountered problems in applications due to the “non-standard” aspect ratio literally a couple of times, and then only in the very first weeks of using the Galaxy S8. Today, it seems, all developers have learned to adapt their programs to such displays.

In fact, the only serious problem with my phone is the red tint. The crimson tint is especially noticeable on a white background. In general, I had to get used to the fact that in the browser white is actually reddish. At the same time, it also changes intensity depending on the angle of inclination.

Within a year, not a trace remained of the oleophobic coating.

Okay, I’m used to the red tint - I’m Belarusian! Otherwise the screen is very pleasant to use. Sometimes it’s too bright and juicy, but it’s OLED. And why natural shades on the phone? Tea is not a design tool, but I, as a user, am pleased to see an embellished, but emotionally more attractive palette.

Don't piss me off, Bixby

Oh, this is another virtual assistant! All you need to know about it is that it is absolutely useless in our area. Actually, there wouldn’t be anything terrible about this if Samsung hadn’t decided to dedicate an entire hardware button and an additional screen to it.

It is impossible to reassign an action to a key without dancing with a tambourine. You can't just disable the button. But this is important considering how many times I pressed it instead of the power button.

Perhaps in second place among the “branded features” of Samsung that are incomprehensible to me are the Edge panels - the same ones that were invented to somehow fill the rounded ends of the display with functionality. Perhaps there really is some meaning to these retractable things, but I couldn’t find it. Most popular contacts? They are in "Favorites" phone book. Popular applications? Here they are - right on your desktop and without unnecessary swipes. Screenshot tools? Well, I can’t even imagine who might need them and how often.

Finally, another very controversial software (although rather hardware-software) thing is Always On. Yes, it’s very cool that you can glance at the screen at any time and find out, for example, the current time without unlocking your phone. But I disabled the function about a month later. Only after this did the battery last me at least a day.

Foot of Clay

It turns out that flagships can still brake. An unpleasant discovery, but that's how it is. You can put up with all the shortcomings of the Galaxy S8 (and in fact there are very few of them). But when the flagship phone “stutters” in the interface, when the camera turns on for a couple of endlessly long seconds, when the keyboard can’t keep up with my fingers...

Samsung's desire to promote its processors is commendable. It's bad that they don't match Qualcomm's flagship models in terms of performance. As a result, you have to deal with a top-end smartphone, the performance of which, subjectively, is at an average level.

And it’s not even about games - the lack of power is visible in normal everyday work. What can we say if even the animation of flipping through desktops cannot boast of smoothness?

What's next?

Galaxy S8 - cool phone, in which two things are frankly annoying: the fingerprint sensor and the performance insufficient for a flagship. The first problem can be radically solved by refusing any kind of identification. But you have to live with the second one. At the same time, the smartphone pleases every day with cool pictures, it has very cool sound (for me, as not the most sophisticated music lover, the included AKG headphones are more than enough) and, of course, the design.

The Galaxy S9 recently came out - that's what I'm using now. On the one hand, the model is very similar to its predecessor. On the other hand, it still gives a slightly different sensation from use. Yes, there are Exynos here too, but so far I have never encountered a lack of power. The display has gotten rid of redness, the fingerprint sensor is finally easy to use, and the battery with Always On consistently lasts for a day. The work on the bugs was done perfectly, this is exactly what the S8 should have become. Except that something still needs to be done with Bixby.

However, it is premature to draw any conclusions about the “nine”. Let's see what happens in a year. “Eight” is good, but, in my opinion, it was released too hastily and a year earlier than it should have been.

It so happened that Samsung has always installed incredibly high price tags on its smartphones in Russia, which are significantly higher than those in the USA, South Korea, China and many other regions of the world. All this led to a significant decrease in the popularity of the brand in Russian territory, and therefore the official online store decided to organize a special temporary promotion that allows you to buy last year’s flagship Samsung Galaxy S8 for 2,000 rubles, that is, much cheaper than its original cost.

The South Korean company assessed the sales dynamics Samsung smartphone Galaxy S8. The volume of devices sold in the first weekend is more than twice the sales results of the previous generation smartphone Galaxy S7. Retail chains confirm that there is demand for this device.

The number of Galaxy S8 sold over the past weekend (from April 28 to 30) is 2.1 times higher than S7 sales, Samsung Electronics told Kommersant. The company does not disclose the number of devices sold.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones have been on sale in the Russian Federation since last Friday at a price of 55 thousand rubles. and 60 thousand rubles. respectively. It was possible to place a pre-order for a smartphone with 100% payment as early as March 29. “The demand is good. It seems to me that it sells better than the Galaxy S6. Maybe even twice. The dynamics with the release of the iPhone 7 are similar,” Alexander Malis, president of Euroset, told Kommersant. He could not compare the number of Galaxy S7 and S8 sold, since at the time of the start of sales of the Galaxy S7 on March 18, 2016, Euroset did not sell mobile equipment Samsung due to a conflict with the manufacturer. General Director of Inventive Retail Group (among the assets under management is the re:Store network) Tikhon Smykov says that sales of the Galaxy S8 are growing, but also finds it difficult to compare them with the sales dynamics of the S7, since they “have a different sales horizon.” “We have collected quite a lot of prepayments. People were ready to make a full prepayment without looking at their smartphone. We see a lot of excitement,” said Mr. Smykov.

Buyers have pre-paid for about 30 thousand devices, and taking into account sales on the first weekend, over 40 thousand S8 and S8+ smartphones can be sold in Russia, estimates Alexander Malis. Leading analyst at Mobile Research Group Eldar Murtazin believes that 17 thousand smartphones were sold in pre-orders before the weekend, of which 55% were S8+. From April 28 to April 30, another 15 thousand devices were sold, and in retail networks the ratio between models was equal, he continues. “If you look at these three days, sales are twice as high as S7,” confirms the expert. At the same time, the price of the S8 is approximately 5 thousand higher than the cost of the S7, he notes.

It was previously reported that the volume of Galaxy S8 pre-orders was higher than many analysts expected. As Reuters reported, this showed that consumers did not seem to be bothered by premium issues. Galaxy Note 7 last year. Galaxy Note 7 was announced in August 2016, the company managed to sell 2.5 million devices, but after cases of overheating and fire of these smartphones became known, Samsung was forced to recall them. In February 2017, the South Korean government confirmed that the cause of the smartphone fire was battery defects (in particular, poor-quality insulation), as well as software problems. The position of the country's authorities coincided with the conclusions of the company itself. Fire reports Galaxy smartphones Note 7 is not scary Galaxy buyers S8 in Russia, says Eldar Murtazin. “The situation with Note 7 did not affect the sales history of S8 in any way,” the expert is sure.

According to the results of a survey by TNS and Ipsos, the global recall of the Note 7 has worsened the perception of the Samsung Electronics brand in those countries where official sales of the Galaxy Note 7 have begun - in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Australia. And in Russia, brand awareness has increased, and the number of respondents who feel proud of owning its devices has also increased, as follows from the findings of TNS and Ipsos.

Sales of the new flagships Samsung S8 and S8+ began in Russia on Friday, April 28. During the first weekend in Russia, twice as many smartphones of this model were sold than the previous one Samsung flagship Galaxy S7 in the spring of 2016, says an employee of a Samsung partner company. According to the results of the first weekend, sales of the Samsung Galaxy S8 were 2.1 times higher than the results of the Galaxy S7 for the same period, the head of the company told Vedomosti. Samsung Mobile in Russia Arkady Graf. Such results are associated with the capabilities of the device: the screen, design and performance indicators all together attract users, he believes.

On April 28, 29 and 30, about 15,000 Galaxy S8/S8+ were sold at retail, which is indeed about twice as many as the Galaxy S7 on the first weekend in 2016, according to Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group. These data do not take into account sales of prepaid pre-orders (in 2017, Samsung first offered such an option in Russia), he notes. According to Murtazin, pre-order sales amounted to about 17,000 more devices.

Galaxy sales S8 for the first weekend after the launch in " M.video" turned out to be three times higher in comparison with the Galaxy S7, says the representative " M.video» Valeria Andreeva. At M.video, sales of flagships are traditionally high, and purchases in installments are popular, she says. In the network of Samsung mono-brand stores included in Inventive Retail Group, over the first weekend, 2.5 times more S8 were sold than S7 last year at the start of sales, notes group representative Lyudmila Semushina.

Sales of the Galaxy S8 at VimpelCom retail are going well: the operator has already sold most of the first batch shipped to it, and there is a shortage of certain specifications of the new model, says VimpelCom representative Anna Aibasheva.

According to Andreeva, sales of the S8 are 15-20% higher than the S8+ (features a larger display diagonal). Typically, the gap between models with different screen sizes is much larger, she says. In stores Inventive Retail Group S8 and S8+ were sold approximately equally, says Semushina.

In addition to the fact that Samsung released a successful model, the high demand for the Galaxy S8 is also explained by the lifting of the boycott that cellular retailers announced against Samsung in mid-2015, Murtazin believes.

Samsung smartphones disappeared from the stores of Euroset, Svyaznoy, Megafon and VimpelCom during the price war that began in the spring of 2015. Then MTS, whose SIM cards were no longer sold in Svyaznoy, began selling smartphones, including Samsung, at prices close to cost in order to attract visitors and encourage them to connect to mobile internet MTS. In response, in the summer of 2015, two retailers and two operators stopped selling Samsung. Euroset President Alexander Malis explained that Samsung supplies a lot of defective products, and a person close to to the South Korean manufacturer, – the desire of retailers to obtain more favorable conditions from the supplier. Samsung was the first to resume sales " VimpelCom" - in August 2016. In February 2017, Samsung returned to Svyaznoy, " Euroset" And " Megaphone ».
