Turn on your computer from your Android phone. How to turn on a PC using an Android phone - Web Programmer's Blog

Home / Windows 7

Good day, dear friends, acquaintances, readers, admirers and other individuals.

I think that many of you have often thought about various, let’s say, alternative ways turning on the computer. In particular, we wrote, that is, without the inclusion of a power button on the case.

By the way, most likely many people know about such a thing as turning on the computer on a schedule or through the Wake-On-Lan function (that is, over the network using a “magic” package). In this article, we will combine business with pleasure and learn how to turn on a computer from a phone using, for starters, Wi-Fi.

Let's get started.

Wake-On-Lan and Android: turn on the computer from the phone

In simple terms, the Wake-On-Lan (W-O-L) function leads to a constant supply of power to the network adapter, which looks at all incoming packets and if there is a “magic” one among them, it turns on the computer. More details can be found on Wikipedia, and we will talk about the various applications of this functionality separately someday.

Actually, you will need a motherboard that supports the above-mentioned function, a phone or tablet, in this case, from Android (although Apple and many other places have applications of this kind) and, for example, the Wake-On-Lan application of the same name (or its analogue).

First of all, you need to enable W-O-L in the BIOS (usually you can get there using the DEL key).

Usually the function is called that way, i.e. Wake-On-Lan, but it may have a name, say, Power On By PME Device (or PCI PME Device) as above. This is due to the fact that in addition to “traditional” network cards and internal modems, for example, an internal TV tuner can have the ability to wake up a computer.

You can take the above-mentioned program, for example. Installation is traditional for all Android applications.

Usage is extremely simple. If you are on your Wi-Fi network and the computer is connected to the router, say, with a cord, then just launch the program and click the “+” button.

At the next stage, you will be asked to enter the address manually or “pull” the interface by sliding your finger across the screen. We’ll talk about manually entering the address and turning on the computer from your phone from anywhere in the world later, but for now just use the automatic search.

Next, all that remains is to select the desired device (computer or laptop) from the list (you can find out the address in the properties of the network connection on the computer), and also assign it some “Color + Name” (aka “Nick”).

Well.. Done. All that remains is to click on the name of the device in the phone (in my case, i.e. in the screenshot above, this is the IP address in local network, i.e. 192.168.1.2).

If it turns on, then you did everything right! :)

Afterword

In a nutshell, something like this. If the topic is interesting to you, then someday I’ll look at how something like this can be done outside the native network and generally not only from the phone :)

As always, if you have any questions, additions, thoughts, etc., please feel free to comment on this post.

Stay with us and everything is so different;)

What's the first thing you do when you get to your desk? Turn on your computer and wait for the OS to load? This time can range from one to several minutes.

Whether you're clicking on the keyboard, moving the mouse, or pressing the power button, you have to be at your computer before you start it, wasting your precious time in the process. Wouldn't it be nice if your computer was ready to go before you even got to it?

Let me show you how to use your Android device to turn on your PC remotely. Tomorrow you can arrive at your desk with Windows already loaded.

Before you start

For this setup to work, your computer must support Wake-on-LAN (WoL). WoL is a feature motherboard. The easiest way to find out if your computer supports WoL is to boot into BIOS and check your power management settings. Click on the correct key when booting (try ESC, DEL, F2 or F8), and your computer should enter BIOS.

Once you are in the BIOS, find the option Wake On LAN and turn it on. You'll probably find it along with other settings related to power or network management. BIOS Settings vary from computer to computer, so you may have to look it up yourself.

If you can't find the Wake on LAN option, the following setting probably won't work.

Fast and easy setup

If your PC supports WoL, then the first step is to install Wake On Lan, This free application for Android.

Download:(for free)

Then you have to connect your Android device to your Windows computer using the app.

When you first open the app, it will look pretty gloomy. Click the icon + " in the lower right corner and follow the onscreen instructions to add your first device.

Once you follow the app's instructions, it will search for devices connected to your local network. If many computers, phones, and tablets use an Internet connection, this list can be confusing. The easiest way to identify your target computer is through its MAC address.

To find your computer's MAC address, go to your computer, press the key Windows + R, enter CMD and press Enter. Then enter ipconfig/all V command line and press Enter. This command will show your computer's physical address, a string of six two-digit numbers also known as the MAC address.

Now go back to the application and select the entry with the corresponding MAC address. Select an alias for the device and select the corresponding Wi-Fi network.

Once you add your computer to the app, it's time to see if it works! Put your computer into sleep or hibernation mode ( Start > Power > Sleep) and press the wake button in the Wake On Lan app.

If it works, great! If not, you have two more settings to check.

Hard setting

So you've enabled WoL in the BIOS and configured the app as described above and it still doesn't wake up your PC? Try the following settings.

Enable WoL for network adapter

You probably haven't configured your network adapter to accept the Wake-On-LAN packet.

On Windows 10, click right click Click the Start button and select Device Manager. Go to Network Adapters, right-click the one you use to connect to the Internet, and select Properties.

On the " Power management» you will find three checkboxes, including “Allow this device to wake the computer from standby mode” and “Allow the computer to be woken from standby mode only by using a magic package.” If they haven't been clicked yet, do so. This should resolve any issues that are causing Android app not working correctly.

Disable Fast Startup

The wol function only works when you are trying to wake up the computer from Sleep or Hibernation mode. WoL doesn't work with hybrid shutdown by default in Windows 8 and Windows 10. Simple solution is to disable quick start.

Open Control Panel, find "Power Options" and select "Change what the power buttons do." At the top, click the "Change Settings" button that is currently unavailable, then scroll down and uncheck "Enable Fast Startup (Recommended)." Finally, click “Save Changes.”

Now put your computer into sleep mode (Start > Power > Sleep) and try again.

If you did everything correctly, the computer should turn on?

AwakeningWindows

Once you have installed the Wake On Lan application, you can start your computer with the press of a button.

Unfortunately, this app will not allow you to automatically wake up your computer; for example, waking up your computer on a schedule or as your phone establishes a connection with your Wi-Fi network. For the latter, try PCAutoWaker, although note that the app hasn't been updated since 2011.

Almost all major manufacturers of smartphones and tablets with operating system Android is offered to users software, with which you can control them from a computer. Programs Samsung Kies, LG, PC Suite, HTC Sync are very good, but they have one important drawback - they all work with devices from only one manufacturer. If the user has several Android devices of different brands, he has to work with several programs, and this is not always convenient.

Fortunately, there are many universal programs for managing Android gadgets. They recognize almost any Android device, make it possible to work with several devices simultaneously, and are often more functional than branded utilities. One such program is the phone manager for Windows "MyPhoneExplorer".

Installing and configuring MyPhoneExplorer

To start using the application, you need to download and install the client for your computer from the official website, as well as install the Android application from the Play Market.

You can connect to your computer using a USB cable, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Attention! The ability to broadcast your phone screen is only available when connected with a USB cable.

Connection via USB cable

Make sure that your phone's debugging interface drivers are installed (ADB drivers are usually installed during the installation of your phone's proprietary software, but can be found on the Internet separately for a specific model).

Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone (Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging" for Android 2+ or "Settings > For Developers > USB Debugging" for Android 4+).

In Android 4.2.2 and later, you need to first unlock the USB debugging option (Settings > About phone > Build number > tap 7 times).

Connect your phone to your laptop with a cable and launch the MyPhoneExplorer PC client application. Click "File > Settings" and in the "Connection via..." group, set the switch to the "USB cable" position and click on the "OK" button.

In the main MyPhoneExplorer window, click File > Connection.

Wi-Fi connection

Make sure your phone's Wi-Fi is turned on and your computer and phone are connected to the same network (router). Launch "MyPhoneExplorer Client" on your phone. It is advisable to set up a WiFi-PIN code to protect against unauthorized access (works with MyPhoneExplorer 1.8.1 and higher).

Launch the PC client application. Make sure MyPhoneExplorer is not blocked Windows Firewall. Click "File > Settings" and in the "Connection via..." group, set the switch to the "Wi-Fi" position and click on the "OK" button.

In the main MyPhoneExplorer window, click File > Connection.

Bluetooth connection

Make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your phone, and that your phone is paired with your PC. Before setting up a pair, set up Bluetooth phone so that the phone is discoverable. When setting up pairing using the proprietary utility of your Bluetooth adapter, if it provides manual setting, select the service "MyPhoneExplorer".

After pairing, find out the COM port number through which the phone is connected to the laptop.

In the "MyPhoneExplorer" settings, select "Bluetooth" and specify the COM port number provided by your Bluetooth adapter utility. Click on the "OK" button.

In the main MyPhoneExplorer window, click File > Connection.

Cast your phone screen to your computer

Once the connection is established, you can synchronize the contents of your device with your computer. To display your phone screen on your computer, click: "Miscellaneous > Phone Keyboard/Upload Screenshot".

A window with a mobile phone screen will open. If the phone screen doesn't appear, try this. Activate the "Update automatically" checkbox so that everything that happens on the phone screen is automatically displayed on the computer.

The funny option “Show mouse cursor on phone” shows the computer mouse cursor directly on the phone screen, although its transfer to the computer is suspended...

If you don't use your phone for several minutes and it falls asleep, you can wake it up with the "Wake up device" button (green button at the top of the window).

The buttons at the bottom of the window duplicate the phone's system buttons: "Menu", "Home" and "Back".

Working with a mouse (instead of a finger) on the phone

Finger touch (Tap) – Click with the left mouse button;

Sliding your finger along the glass – Hold down the left mouse button, move the cursor in the desired direction, release the key;

Long tap - Hold down the left mouse button for a second.

Other features of MyPhoneExplorer

In the program interface, all basic smartphone data is available for viewing and editing. Using the built-in file manager you can view all files and perform basic operations with them (copying, moving, deleting, creating folders). It is possible to view files both on the memory card and on internal memory devices

You can also view a list of available applications, get information about the installation date and the size of the application. Options for exporting and installing applications are available.

Contacts and SMS messages

Using "MyPhoneExplorer" you can add/delete contacts and even make a call directly from the program. In addition, synchronization, import and export of contacts are implemented. To display calls, there is a section in which outgoing, received and missed calls are shown separately. Text messages are divided into sent, forwarded, draft and saved. Using "MyPhoneExplorer" you can create an archive of SMS messages and save them to your computer.

Organizer

The calendar has a convenient interface: from “MyPhoneExplorer” you can add new events, notes, and set reminders (their list is shown in a separate section). The Android app has widgets that allow you to display these notes on your phone's home screen.

Phone information

MyPhoneExplorer is also an information utility. In it you can view information about the smartphone model, processor, firmware, battery charge level, temperature, voltage (see the first picture of the article), as well as the amount of free and used memory.

Did you know that there is now an application that allows you to turn on your computer remotely via the Internet from anywhere in the world? You can download it from the link (and) Have you ever encountered a situation where you urgently need to access your computer? For example, there are some files or photographs on the computer that are needed in at the moment. By using this application you will learn how to remotely turn on a computer via the Internet and then use it using the program remote control computer. To use remote turning on of a computer via the Internet, you need to know how to set it up.

What is needed:

- a computer connected via Ethernet to the router

— WakeOnLan configured in the BIOS on the computer (a function that implements remote switching on of the computer via a LAN cable)

— a router with configured SSH or Telnet connection from outside and support for Wake-on-LAN

— installed on a computer and smartphone TeamViwer for remote control

Setting up your computer

1. You need to restart the computer and enter the BIOS (usually just press F2 or DEL when the first lines appear on the screen).

2. In the POWER tab (or something like that), enable the Wake-on-LAN function (remote turn on) for S4 mode (very low power mode, sleep).

4. Open “Device Manager” (for example, enter this combination in the search after clicking the “Start” button)

5. In the manager you need to select network card among network adapters and go to properties. (it will contain the words "Ethernet" or "LAN", not to be confused with the Wi-Fi adapter, it usually contains the words "Wireless" or "WLAN")

6. In the properties on the “Advanced” tab, check for the presence of the Wake on Lan (WOL, Wake on Magic Packet) item and if it is there, enable it.

7. The computer setup is completed, it is advisable to reboot the computer again. To enable remote activation via WOL, you need to turn it off through hibernation, and not through shutdown.

Setting up the router

We will configure the router using the Asus RT-N66U as an example, however, the settings for routers are not very different and most likely you will be able to configure others.

1. Need to configure remote connection to the router:

a) If you have a static external IP, then you can skip this point. Setting up DDNS. To do this, go to Internet settings -> DDNS and enable the dynamic DNS service. For example, noip.com. You need to create an address at which your router will be accessible from the outside and enter information about this in the router:

b) configure SSH access to the router. In my router, it is enough to put the following settings on the “Administration” -> “System” tab (For DD-WRT firmware, there is a manual, but access will only be if the user login is “root”, these are firmware restrictions)

Setting up the application

Everything is simple in the application. Go to settings and enter:

1. DDNS address (or external static IP)

2. Login/Password for SSH/Telnet router

3. Connection type

4. You can find out the MAC address of your computer’s network card as follows: Network and Control Center shared access-> Changing adapter settings (or " Network connections"), and then as in the screenshot.

Today, almost every person has a mobile device, regardless of their age and profession. And it’s no longer surprising to meet a primary school student who is able to answer the question of whether it’s via USB or Wi-Fi. The need for this may arise, for example, in the following cases:

  • for charging your phone from a USB port;
  • if necessary, copy data from or to the phone (photos, music files, e-books, etc.);
  • to restore the functionality of the smartphone;
  • for the purpose of use as a webcam;
  • in some other cases.

About how to turn on a switched off phone through a computer, and others useful things- in order.

Connection methods

Connect mobile phone or a smartphone to a computer in the following ways:

The first option in most cases is only suitable for copying data. In addition, some simple or outdated cellular models do not have wireless communication modules. In this regard, we will dwell in more detail on the second option, and also consider how to turn on the phone through a computer. In some cases, this will help to revive a faulty device.

How to connect your phone to your computer via USB

To connect you will need a USB cable. This wire often comes with the phone, or may be part of charger. On one side of the cable there is a USB port plug, and on the other there is a plug for connecting to a mobile phone. The vast majority of modern phones have a microUSB port for connection.

The second most popular is the miniUSB port. This input can be found on tablets and some smartphone models.

For other types of connectors, the connecting cable is purchased by model. The figure shows an example of a data cable for some phones Nokia.

How to turn on your phone via computer

This need may arise in the event of a malfunction mobile device. Turning on the phone in this way is not available for every model. Before performing the operation, you need to download the service manual for your phone from the manufacturer’s website. It contains all the necessary data. There you can almost always find how to turn on your phone via a computer, and the necessary software. It is necessary to treat non-original software versions (firmware) with caution. By installing this, you can lose the warranty or ruin your device forever.

The service manual may contain information on how to revive the gadget using key combinations. In this case, information on how to turn on the phone through a computer will no longer be needed, because there will be no need to connect them. Usually you need to hold down a couple of keys at the same time - volume up or down and the power button. In this way you can get into service menu. In this case, to restore the device’s functionality, it is recommended to do a so-called “hard reboot”, or hard reset. However, we warn you that this manipulation may delete all information from the phone: call data, phone book, settings, etc.

If your phone supports downloading via cable, then on the manufacturer’s website, in the support section, there is most likely software for reinstalling the firmware and resuscitating the mobile. Download service program and run it. The interface of such programs is intuitive and does not require special technical knowledge. If nothing works, it is better to take the device to a specialized service center.

Using the phone camera

If you are the owner of a modern smartphone with a camera, then it becomes possible to use the gadget in such an unusual role for a phone as a webcam.

This will be extremely useful for communication, for example via Skype, in the absence of an ordinary webcam. To do this, for smartphones on Android based You need to download the IP Webcam or Bambuser applications. For iPhone owners EpocCam and MiniWebCam programs are suitable. In addition, the gadget can be used as a surveillance system or video recorder. The main thing is to choose the right application. But fortunately, such software is now sufficient for any mobile operating system.
